We saw Winter’s Bone on Monday. It had some great performances and interesting scenes and settings. Like Wendy and Lucy it’s another interesting insight into the American poor and the housing crisis. Although this time framed as a thriller/ detective story – which I’m not sure quite worked.
The main story line was a bit repetitive with multiple similar gatekeeper scenes and the twists just didn’t push things in a new direction. The end of the third act seemed particularly unbelievable. Having said that for a low budget film (I’m assuming) it was pretty impressive. Jennifer Lawrence in particular gives a really engaging debut performance. It’s just that the film itself was not quite five stars everyone’s been giving it.
