The Book of Hopes shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the year

Earlier this year, I was asked by Katherine Rundell to contribute to an anthology she was putting together to celebrate hope in dark times.

The Book of Hopes is available online for free, but it’s now been published as a gorgeous hardback edition. With part of the profits going to raise money for NHS charities to support the amazing work of Doctors and Nurses and hospital-staff during lockdown.

In the last few weeks I’ve been given two more fab pieces of news about the Book of Hopes…

First, it’s going to be released as an audiobook, read by Stephen Fry, Helena Bonham Carter and Ben Bailey Smith. My poem ‘Football Boots’ is read by Stephen Fry, who is just mellifluous to hear!

I’ve also just found out that The Book of Hopes has been shortlisted for the Waterstones Book of the Year 2020. It’s such an honour, and I’m proud to be involved in the project, with the fantastic writer and editor and organiser of it all, Katherine Rundell, and the whole team at Bloomsbury.

Featherlight Published

‘Lighting the way home’: Myth and history combine in a magical adventure inspired by the incredible true stories of female lighthouse keepers.

I am thrilled to announce that I have a short standalone adventure story Featherlight coming out on the 15th April 20201 with Barrington Stoke. Written and formatted specially for dyslexic and reluctant readers. Find out more below…

Deryn’s father is the lighthouse keeper on Featherstone Island, keeping the lantern lit to protect passing boats from the treacherous rocky coastline. But when an emergency arises and her parents have to travel to the mainland for help, Deryn is left alone to keep watch over the lighthouse, and she finds herself in a terrible situation when the lamp runs out of oil during a wild storm. With a fishing boat in peril on the sea, and time running out to rescue those on board, Deryn seeks help from an unusual source – a creature born of myth and magic, who can help light the way.

Featherlight has cover artwork by Evan Hollingdale and internal black and white illustrations by Anneli Bray.

My 6 favourite animal sidekicks

I love animal sidekicks. My children’s series ‘The Cogheart Adventures’ features an animal sidekick named Malkin. Malkin is a mechanical fox. Unlike a real fox he can talk, but, just like a real fox, if real foxes could talk, he has high-minded opinions about everything.

Here are six of my favourite animal sidekicks from children’s literature…

Who are you favourite animal sidekicks?

Why not write a story with your own animal sidekick in?
